Platform & headset support
Which headsets, computers and software versions HEXR is validated on, and how sure each answer is.
What com.microtube.hexr and the Python library run on, as of 11 October 2026. Each row says how sure it is:
| Status | Means |
|---|---|
| Validated | A working project or test exists for it, named in the Evidence column |
| Confirmed | Microtube has confirmed it works, but there is no public project for it here |
| Not validated | It may work, but nobody has tested it. Treat it as unsupported |
| Not supported | The code cannot do it |
“Validated” means a project ran on that hardware. Compiling is a separate, weaker check: Software versions says which package release each project was run with, and which releases have only been compiled and unit-tested.
Headsets and trackers
| Device | Status | How it connects | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 | Validated | Unity package; Meta OVR or OpenXR | The Meta tutorial project targets both |
| Meta Quest 3S | Confirmed | Unity package; Meta OVR or OpenXR | The Meta tutorial does not list Quest 3S among its target devices; add it in your own project’s Meta settings |
| PICO 4, PICO 4 Ultra — consumer and Enterprise | Validated on PICO 4; confirmed on the others | Unity package; OpenXR with PICO’s OpenXR plugin | The PICO tutorial project, and on-device fixes for PICO 4 in the package |
| Microsoft HoloLens | Confirmed, through a separate integration | Not the Unity package: the older MRTK tutorial carries its own copy of the earlier HaptGlove plugin | The MRTK tutorial ↗, Unity 2022.3 and MRTK3. Which HoloLens model it targets is not stated in the project |
| Leap Motion (Ultraleap) | Confirmed, through a separate integration | Not the Unity package: a separate Windows project with the earlier HaptGlove plugin | Ask us for it |
| Meta Quest Pro | Not validated | — | No project targets it |
| PICO Neo3 | Not validated | — | No project targets it |
| HTC Vive, SteamVR and other OpenXR headsets | Not validated | — | The Create HexR Rig menu item names SteamVR, but no project has been tested on it |
HEXR adds touch; the hand position comes from your headset or tracker. See Working with hand-tracking.
Where your app connects from
The glove talks to whatever runs your app, over Bluetooth Low Energy. This is about that device, not the headset you look through.
| Your app runs on | Unity package | Python library |
|---|---|---|
| A Quest or PICO headset build (Android) | Supported. The rigs’ default. The app asks for the Bluetooth permission on first connect | — |
| Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit — the Unity Editor | Supported. Connect from HexR → HexR Tools → HexR Haptics Tester in Play mode | Supported through bleak |
| Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit — a build | Supported. Set Build Platform to Window on each HaptGloveHandler first | — |
| Windows on 32-bit or ARM | Not supported. The Windows Bluetooth library is 64-bit x86 only | Whatever bleak supports |
| macOS | Not supported. A macOS Bluetooth library ships in the package, but nothing calls it yet | Supported through bleak, not tested by us. Use the address AddressDiscovery.py prints |
| Linux | Not supported | Supported through bleak, not tested by us |
| iOS | Not supported by the package | — |
| HoloLens (UWP) | Not supported by the package — see the MRTK row above | — |
Software versions
The versions the two tutorial projects are built with. Newer versions of the XR packages usually work, but these are the ones known to.
| Component | Validated | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unity | 2022.3 LTS to 6000.6 | Both tutorials use 6000.6.0f1. More on Unity version support |
| HEXR Unity package | Run on hardware: com.microtube.hexr 0.9.3, in both tutorial projects. 0.9.4: compiled against Unity 6000.6, XR Interaction Toolkit 3.6.0 and Meta XR SDK 205, with its edit-mode tests passing; not yet run on hardware | Both tutorials pin #v0.9.3 |
| OpenXR path | OpenXR 1.18.0, XR Hands 1.9.0, XR Interaction Toolkit 3.6.0 | HEXR’s OpenXR code needs XR Interaction Toolkit 3.x |
| Meta OVR path | Meta XR SDK 205.0.0 | Needs Unity 6000.0.66f2 or newer. Earlier SDK versions have not been tested |
| PICO | PICO OpenXR plugin 1.4.1 | Not the older PICO Unity Integration SDK, which HEXR does not support |
| Android | Minimum API 32 (Quest tutorial), 29 (PICO tutorial) | ARM64, IL2CPP |
| Python | 3.8 to 3.13 | The library pins bleak 0.22.3, which does not install on 3.14 |
