Unity project setup

Install the HEXR package and pick your XR backend.

Install the package

You need Unity 2022.3 or newer and git installed — Unity uses git to download the package.

  1. Open Package Manager

In Unity, go to Window → Package Manager.

  2. Add the package

Click + in the top-left corner, choose Add package from git URL…, paste this URL and click Add:

    text
    https://github.com/MicrotubeTechnologies/com.microtube.hexr.git

Use the URL. Add package by name won’t find com.microtube.hexr, because it isn’t on Unity’s package registry.

Updating later: Unity doesn’t update the package by itself. Go to Window → Package Manager → com.microtube.hexr → Update. To keep a project on one release instead, add #v0.9.4 to the end of the URL. Upgrading a project from before 0.6? Read the changelog first.

Pick an XR backend

HEXR doesn’t install an XR backend for you. Pick yours below and follow its steps. On Meta Quest, use Meta OVR unless your project already uses Unity’s XR Interaction Toolkit.

For Meta Quest 2, 3 and 3S with Meta’s Interaction SDK.

  1. Add the Meta XR SDK to your Unity account

Open the free Meta XR All-in-One SDK on the Asset Store and click Add to My Assets. You only do this once.

  2. Install it

In Unity, go to Window → Package Manager, switch the dropdown to My Assets, find Meta XR All-in-One SDK and click Install.

  3. Check it in Project Setup

Open HexR → HexR Tools → Project Setup, choose Meta OVR and press Re-scan. Install anything else it lists.

Rather start from a working scene? Follow the Meta Quest walkthrough.

For Meta Quest through Unity’s OpenXR and XR Interaction Toolkit.

  1. Open Project Setup

Go to HexR → HexR Tools → Project Setup and choose OpenXR.

  2. Install what it lists

Everything comes from Unity’s own registry, including XR Interaction Toolkit 3.x, and Project Setup installs it for you.

Rather start from a working scene? Use the OpenXR / PICO tutorial project ↗.

For PICO 4 and PICO 4 Ultra. PICO runs on HEXR’s OpenXR support plus PICO’s own plugin.

  1. Open Project Setup

Go to HexR → HexR Tools → Project Setup, choose PICO and install the packages it lists.

  2. Add PICO’s OpenXR plugin

Download it from PICO’s developer site — Project Setup links to it — and unzip it into your project’s Packages/ folder. Use the OpenXR plugin, not the older PICO Unity Integration SDK.

  3. Re-scan

Press Re-scan in Project Setup to confirm nothing is missing.
