At the start of 2021, Fortune Times visited Professor Lim Chwee Teck’s laboratory at NUS and met Dr Yeo Joo Chuan and Dr Du Kang of Microtube.
The interview explains the core technology: a microfibre sensor made of soft rubber tubing filled with non-toxic liquid metal, thin enough to be stitched into fabric, developed in 2017. Microtube was founded in 2018 to commercialise it. The team described a plan to start with gaming, where the glove could replace bulky controllers in VR and AR, before medical uses such as pulse and breathing monitoring and stroke rehabilitation at home, which take longer to bring to market.
