How it works

Measured at the muscle.

Strain, at the muscle

A contracting muscle gets thicker. The band wraps the limb, so it stretches as the muscle expands, and the FLEXR sensor measures that stretch.

Worn, not mounted

95% of stationary workouts are tracked with the band simply worn on the arm or the thigh — nothing clamps to equipment, and nothing needs repositioning between exercises.

The kinetic chain

The body’s segments are linked, so the muscles along the load path contract whatever a lift targets. The band picks up the rep even when the muscle underneath it is not the one being trained.

The data

Counting reps is the easy part.

The ARIS algorithm turns each repetition into the measures sport science already uses, and tracks them in the ARIS app over time. The same measures carry into rehabilitation, where a held contraction matters more than a completed rep.

Tempo

Was the prescribed tempo actually followed?

A repetition has three phases: the concentric lift, the eccentric lowering, and any isometric hold. ARIS times each one separately, so time under tension can be checked phase by phase rather than assumed.

The eccentric is the phase that gets rushed. A weight dropped rather than lowered gives away most of what it was meant to train, and eccentric control never develops. Tempo is prescribed constantly and verified almost never — this is what verifies it.

Velocity

When to end the set.

How fast each repetition moved. Velocity falls as fatigue accumulates, so the drop across a set shows when an athlete has given what the set was for — instead of counting to a number decided in advance.

Power

The quality of the effort, not the quantity.

Force and velocity together. Two athletes can complete the same reps at the same load and produce very different output; power is the measure that separates them.

It also opens a second route to progressive overload. Traditional programming adds weight or volume to keep the adaptation coming; training for power means moving the same load faster and more explosively instead — so an athlete can keep progressing without continually adding load.

Isometric holds

Strength deficits, and one side against the other.

In a static contraction there is no repetition to count — only force held over time. That is the measurement rehabilitation runs on: how much was produced, how long it was sustained, and how the injured side compares with the other.

Trends

Whether any of it is working.

Every session stacked across weeks and months, so a programme is judged on measured change rather than on how the last session happened to feel.

Engagement

Make the workout the controller.

The ARIS Band is a FLEXR device, so it works with FLEXR Controller — our free Windows app that turns movement into a keypress. The exercise becomes the control: the game only moves when the rep is done.

Rehab games built for the job run out. Patients finish them, the novelty wears off, and adherence drops back to where it started. This works with any game on the PC, so there is nothing to run out of — people play what they already like.
